Frequently Asked Questions
What is the HPV vaccine?
The HPV (Human Papillomavirus) vaccine helps protect against several strains of the virus that can cause cervical cancer, genital warts, and other HPV-related cancers such as throat, anal, and penile cancers. At MedAssistant, we use the Gardasil 9 vaccine — the latest and most comprehensive version available — providing protection against nine high-risk HPV types.
Who should get the HPV vaccine?
The HPV vaccine is suitable for both men and women, typically recommended for:
– Individuals who missed the school vaccination programme
– Adults who want extra protection against HPV-related conditions
– Anyone who is sexually active and wishes to reduce their risk of HPV infection
Even if you’ve already been diagnosed with HPV, vaccination is still strongly recommended — it can protect against other strains of the virus and help prevent re-infection with your current type.
How many doses of the HPV vaccine do I need?
The HPV vaccine is given as a course of three doses:
1️⃣ First dose: Initial vaccination
2️⃣ Second dose: At least 4 weeks after the first dose
3️⃣ Third dose: 6 months after the first dose
This schedule ensures the best long-term protection.
What if I’ve missed a dose?
If you miss one of your HPV vaccine doses, don’t worry — you don’t need to restart the course. You can simply book your next available appointment to continue your schedule where you left off.
Can I have the HPV vaccine if I already have HPV?
Yes. Even if you have tested positive for one strain of HPV, the vaccine will still help protect you against other types of the virus. It can also reduce the risk of re-infection with your current strain.
Are there any side effects?
Most people experience no side effects. Occasionally, you may notice mild redness or tenderness around the injection site, or a slight temperature. These effects usually resolve within 24–48 hours.
