MedAssistant provides Microsclerotherapy Treatment in our Glasgow clinic. This is a medical procedure used to eliminate thread veins ( spider veins). Sclerotherapy involves an injection of a saline solution directly into the vein. It is ideal for those people who want to reduce the appearance of veins normally on their legs. Contact us to see how we might help you.
Spider veins, also known as telangiectasias or angioectasias, are small, dilated blood vessels. The affected vessels appear like thin red or blue lines on the surface of the skin and look like spider webs or tree branches.
Anyone can suffer with spider veins, and they can appear on any part of the body but mostly affect the legs. Although harmless, they can cause distress as the sufferer often feels self-conscious, particularly if the veins are on an exposed part of the body, such as the legs, which people can see.
Microsclerotherapy effectively treats spider veins. It’s often considered the treatment of choice for small varicose veins. The procedure can also improve related symptoms such as aching, swelling, burning and night cramps. Micro-Sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution directly into the vein that causes it to scar and collapse, forcing blood to reroute through healthier veins. The collapsed vein is reabsorbed into local tissue and eventually fades.
After an initial assessment and if we deem you are suitable for treatment we would use a fine needle to inject a sclerosing solution directly into the problem vein. You might experience a light stinging sensation as solution is injected. Following treatment as the vein dissolves, itching is normal. A compression garment is recommended to be worn for 5 days post treatment.
On average 1-3 sessions are required depending on the number and severity of the veins. The same veins will not return once treated, but new ones might develop over time. For as long as our blood is pumping this is not something that can be stopped.
Immediately following treatment the treated veins will appear red and elevated. Over the following days bruising can develop and possible discolouration. These are normal and expected associated side effects which subside with time over the coming weeks. For body veins patients should be prepared for 4-6 weeks of downtime in treated areas.
Our patients have informed us that the treatment is like having a hair pulled out, and is far less painful than laser or IPL treatments. Some patients experience a small amount of inflammation around the treated area but this subsides reasonably quickly.
The following people might not be able to get the treatment, however one of our trained medical professionals will discus this with you at the assessment:
